Many runners are drawn to the idea of ‘racing for others.’ For some, it is the challenge of fundraising that inspires them to commit to their first 10K. For others, the cycle of ‘training, race, rest…training, race, rest’ becomes mundane, and they long to feel the miles count for something more. Still others take action after the tragic collision of a loved one and disease. Whatever the motivating factor, raising money for charity demonstrates a passion for the sport and allows a runner or cyclist to see that passion translate into tangible aid for others. It’s a pretty cool thing.

Maybe this story begins when Jim – from Minnesota – and Kelly – from California – became regular contributors over at Loving The Run. Maybe it starts HERE, when Kelly encouraged runners to step out and GO BIG in 2011. Or HERE, when Jim began paying attention to those who were racing for a cause.

Or maybe it all started last year, when Kelly first  partnered with Matt, from Race For Others, and raised $5,000 for Feed My Starving Children as she trained for her first marathon (read her race report HERE).

However the story began, the second chapter is a natural partnership between @bikerly, @chmpgnepolitics and @raceforothers.

What IS Feed My Starving Children?

Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is a non-profit organization committed to feeding children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults in the community come together, regardless of race or religion, and they hand-pack meals specifically formulated for malnourished children. These meals are then shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world.

FMSC has 4 permanent warehouses; two in Minneapolis and two in Chicago where volunteers come six days a week to pack nutritious meals for starving kids around the world. However, they also will host MobilePack Events in various cities across the United States.

On November 16, 2011, Sacramento will be hosting a three-day regional mobile packing event. The goal is to pack 500,000 meals. The cost per meal is 24 cents. That means Sacramento needs to raise $120,000 to pay for these meals.

Through this website, Jim, Kelly and Matt have committed to raising $10,000 of that total amount. But it cannot be done without your help. $10,000 is a scary number. It’s a big number. But we think, without a doubt, that it is totally, 100% do-able.

$10,000.

Hi Kelly I just read all your recent posts. I love to hear you talk about your running. When I was a runner I had many of the same thoughts. However I never wanted to be a ultra runner. I aways loved the trails best and the steep hills and rugged terain. Keep up the good work. I will try to come to the 1-11-11 run in Auburn. Love Bob

Ahh this is incredible! Let me know what I can do to help. I have a new niece being born around that time and they live in the Sacramento area. I could come visit :)
